The Mall Nanxiang is a project capturing the opportunities brought on by the rapid Chinese urbanization. Due to unprecedented growth, there is a mismatch of supply and demand when a new town is evolving.
The East Nanxiang residential precinct, which was farmland 10 years ago, is now a massive area with over 4 million sqm of residential lived-in gross floor area. Today, it is one of the most popular suburban locations for the influx of population moving into Shanghai. There is a shortage of retail facilities to support this community. We identified an existing mall, located at the gateway to the entire precinct, which was mismanaged, poorly designed, and 10 years old. We repurposed the 49,000 sqm mall into a vibrant new hub for family activities, including dining, entertainment, children-related, and hypermarket options. The repurposed asset offers a suburban getaway from the bustle of urban life.
This project also benefits from strong tourist consumption as Nanxiang, with over 1,000 years of rich cultural heritage, is home to renowned tourist attractions.
